1. Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant as a major reservoir of antibiotic resistance (Ph.D, IIT Roorkee)

Developing countries like India with high infectious disease burden and heavy antibiotic consumption being reported, the need for the detection of resistance patterns in various environmental compartments is a considerable situation. Sewage treatment plants (STP’s) are recognized to achieve selective pressure on bacteria to develop resistance and also act as an intermediate for the release of resistant bacteria to the environment. This study is aimed to identify the presence of Fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics and resistant bacteria in the STP’s with an objective to interpret the effects of biological treatment, tertiary treatments and the presence of certain concentrations of FQ’s on the resistant bacteria.
